Ash Kitchen in Northland Bach
A quintessential Kiwi bach in Northland was due for a kitchen make-over, and the task was to make the new kitchen fit in with both the existing rimu joinery details and the original floral carpet that had enchanted the owner into keeping it.
The varnished rimu had a slightly dark, almost reddish hue and the floral carpet needed a quiet backdrop, so these factors pointed towards ash due to its fair colour and subtle grain. This would create a good contrast to the rimu, so each timber species could stand out and talk each their story of a bach lived in for decades.
And the floral carpet, which was a guiding factor for all colours? Well, it’s still there, looking great with the new ash kitchen but the owner is now contemplating a replacement that celebrates the next chapter in the life of the Northland bach.
